finished_basementIt’s not often that a newly built home comes with a newly built basement. The subterranean level is left unfinished and unfurnished by a lot of development construction companies and it is up to the owner to decide if they want to do anything with it. On average, only a small percentage of people choose to spend the time and money to make a basement more livable. The rest use it as a workroom, storage, or forget about it completely and miss the added value that a finished basement can bring to a home.

First and foremost, a finished basement can be added living space for guest rooms, romper rooms, or game rooms. By adding bedrooms downstairs, teenagers can have a place to “move into” and feel as though they have a private space; leaving their old bedroom to be renovated as a pleasant and handy guestroom for visitors or home office.
Additionally, as a family expands, a finished basement is a great place to grow into and play. Need a safe place with lots of floor area for toddlers to scamper? A large section can be set aside as a play room with walls and flooring that can be “sacrificed” to crayon art, toy dents, or the occasional spray of grape juice.

Fortunately, children aren’t the only ones to benefit from a finished basement. Once the kids have grown and moved out, the former romper room can be repainted and re-carpeted for a low price turning it into a relaxing game room or downstairs hangout area complete with bar, chairs, couches, and entertainment center; an ideal place for parties or weekly get-togethers. Smaller ex-bedrooms can become craft-rooms or man-caves; quiet hide-away places.

However, function isn’t the only benefit. A home with a finished basement has more value than one without; especially if the option exists for the ideal option of a walkout. Adding bedrooms and bathrooms downstairs increases the room count of the house, thereby increasing the worth of the home. As an added bonus, when the time comes to sell the home, the finished basement will bring more interest from the market; decreasing the time from opening to sale. On the other hand, too many rooms will give the area a choppy look. An even division of small and large areas gives the basement a clean and open feel while still providing room options. Finding the balance is essential.

Finishing a basement can be a simple job or a complex project depending on the desires of the owner. Perhaps it’s a DIY job or needs a contractor. Either way, a finished basement will turn a cold, dark, damp area into a bright, warm, livable area that not only adds to the market value of the house itself, but to the family that resides inside.
